How to clean Android photos

  1. Open this page in your phone's browser, or on a computer after copying the photos over.
  2. Choose the photos from your gallery. You can add many at once.
  3. Review the list of what was found, such as location and camera model.
  4. Download the clean copies. Where they are saved depends on your phone and browser, often the Downloads folder.

Stop saving the location

Most Android camera apps have a setting to save the location in photos, often called location tags or geotags. Turning it off means new photos are saved without GPS data. The menus differ between phone brands and versions. Some photo apps also let you remove the location from a photo before you share it.

Questions

Do Android phones save photos as JPG?

Most Android phones save JPG by default. Some can also use other formats such as HEIC, which this tool does not support yet. In that case, switch the camera to JPG or export a JPG copy.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photos are processed on your device and never leave it.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs on your device, and the tool does not download any extra files to process your photos.

Does removing metadata reduce image quality?

No. The tool removes the metadata blocks from the file without re-compressing the image, so the pixels stay exactly the same.

Why keep the photo rotation?

Phones often store a photo sideways and use a rotation tag to display it upright. If you remove that tag, the photo may appear rotated. The rotation tag holds no personal information, so keeping it is safe. You can turn it off.

Does it remove the data from the original file?

No. Your original file is not changed. You download a new, cleaned copy.

Which files can it clean?

JPG, PNG and WebP. Other formats, like HEIC from iPhones, are not supported yet. Convert them to JPG first.
